When dealing with a termite problem, fumigation (also known as ‘tenting’)is the most effective treatment option. At AAI Pest Control, this is our primary choice for getting rid of termites. It’s the best way to kill all the termites infesting your home – which is the only way to make sure the problem doesn’t come back.
If you have questions about drywood termite fumigation, read on – and don’t hesitate to call us if you’re dealing with an infestation. Not sure if you have a termite problem? We offer termite inspections as well.
How Does Fumigation Work?
Fumigation involves sealing the affected structure with a tarp (also called a “tent”) and filling it with a termiticide gas. The gas reaches all the hard-to-reach areas in your home and kills all the termites inside.
This process takes several days, and when it’s over, you can rest assured that there isn’t any leftover residue from the treatment. When your treatment is complete, a technician will make completely sure that your home is safe to live in before you return.

How Do I Prepare For Fumigation?
Your technician will brief you on preparations before your service begins, but generally speaking, there are a few things you’ll have to do:
- Find a place to stay. You can’t live in your house while it’s being fumigated, so you’ll have to find a place to spend a few nights.
- Remove houseplants (and pets.) Houseplants will need to be removed from the home. If you have pet fish, they will also need to be removed.
- Cover food. Food and drinks can stay in your house but will need to be bagged up to avoid contamination. This includes food in the fridge!
Benefits of Termite Fumigation
There are many benefits to this type of termite treatment. The most obvious one is that it gets into all those out-of-reach areas; your home isn’t airtight, which means that the termiticide gas can permeate the structure completely. It’s the most effective way to distribute the gas and make sure every last termite is killed.
Can I Treat Drywood Termites Without Tenting?
There are treatment options besides fumigation; naturally, not everyone can leave their house long enough for fumigation to happen. In those cases, alternatives may be used. These other treatments come with a lower success rate than fumigation, though – which means you may need to pay for extra treatments if these fail.
- Localized heat treatment. Termites can’t survive long in temperatures over 100°F. This treatment involves concentrating heated air near the termite’s nest.
- Whole home heat treatment. This treatment heats the entire home to kill termites. It’s quicker than fumigation and doesn’t require you to leave your home for an extended period, but it may not be as effective in all cases.
- Liquid treatment. This involves drilling holes in the affected area and injecting a termiticide. This works best for subterranean termites, but doesn’t help much when dealing with drywood termites.
- Baiting systems. These are best for preventing infestations from happening. They aren’t as effective at ending an existing infestation in your home.
